Vicious thugs threatened to ‘smash a house and kids up’ after being spotted trying to break in to a van outside a Sutton Coldfield home.
The incident took place at around 3.30am on Friday (December 27) when a man heard a noise outside and saw two lads trying to break in to his works van in Lowlands Avenue, Streetly.
The householder shouted that there was ‘nothing in the van’, from his upstairs window. But instead of leaving, one yob holding a cricket bat got out of the car. He was also told ‘there are kids in the house’.
But he proceeded to smash the windscreens of a small van on the family’s drive and their car, shouting ‘that’s for being nosey b*****ds’.
He then said, ‘next time I’ll be back to smash your house and kids up’ and then threw a lump hammer at the upstairs window – which landed on the family’s roof.
The mum-of-two in the house, who asked not to be named, said she has a 10-year-old and a seven-year-old and now her youngest ‘didn’t want to go back to bed and wanted to move’.
The 35-year-old mum said: “My husband had gone to the toilet when he heard a car and thought it was the next door neighbours coming back.
“His works van was two doors down and he has previously had it broken in to in August.
“It had all tinted glass but with one window broken he asked for it to be replaced with clear glass.
“The two lads had gone to the tinted side and he told them to look the other side – and they’d see there was nothing in there.
“There were two out of a car – a grey Astra – and one in it. The bloke in the back was waving a cricket bat about – it looked new.
“I grabbed my phone, and when I came back I saw a bloke shaking a bat and he then turned on the car and smashed it and our small van on the drive and said: ‘that’s for being nosey b*****ds, next time it will be your house and your kids’.
“They have then taken a lump hammer out of my husband’s work van and thrown it at our upstairs window. Had it hit the window it could have caused a lot of damage.
“We knew something had been thrown but we didn’t know what until someone said this morning ‘there’s a hammer on the roof’.
“My husband said had he been downstairs, he’d have gone outside and who knows what would have happened.
“Another woman also said there had been an attempted break in to a Ford van in Coniston Road around the same time.”
The two men who got out of the car were said to be wearing dark clothing, with hoods up and scarves covering their faces so only their eyes could be seen.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “We are investigating a report of criminal damage after the windows of a van and car were smashed just after 3.30am on Friday (December 27) on Lowlands Avenue in the Streetly area of Walsall.
“A group of men are alleged to have been trying to break into a van parked on a driveway. When they were disturbed by the owner, they smashed the windscreen of this van and a car.
